Many morning routines look impressive and last a week. The ones that last are short, flexible and built around what you really need. Here is a simple way to build one.

Start with sleep

A good morning begins the night before. Aim for a regular bedtime and wake-up time, even at weekends. Most adults do well with seven to nine hours. No routine can make up for chronic tiredness.

Three small things, not ten

Choose three simple habits to begin with. For example: drink a glass of water, move your body for ten minutes, and spend five minutes planning your day. Once these feel automatic, you can add something else.

Move, even a little

It doesn’t have to be a hard workout. A short walk, some stretching or a few simple exercises wake the body up and help your mood. Daylight in the morning also helps set your body clock.

Protect the first hour

Try not to start the day with email or social media. Give yourself a little time before other people’s demands arrive. Use it to think, read or prepare for the one task that matters most that day.

Be kind to yourself

You will miss days, and that is normal. Don’t treat a missed morning as a failure. Pick it up again the next day. A routine is there to support you, not to judge you.
