A destination wedding can be unforgettable, but it asks for more planning than one at home. This checklist puts the main decisions in a sensible order so you can stay calm.
1. Decide who matters most
Start with the guest list. A destination wedding often means a smaller, closer group, because guests must travel and pay for it. Decide who you can’t imagine the day without, and let that guide the size and style.
2. Choose the place with care
Consider the weather in your month, the travel time for your guests, and whether the location has the venues, vendors and facilities you need. Check local marriage rules early. Some countries need paperwork well ahead of time, and a legal ceremony at home plus a celebration abroad is a common solution.
3. Set a budget, then add a buffer
Write down what you can spend, and share it with anyone who is contributing. Keep a cushion for surprises, because costs often rise. Remember that guests pay for their own travel, so keep their costs in mind when choosing dates and places.

4. Visit, or hire someone you trust
If you can, visit before you commit. If not, work with a local planner who knows the venues and the suppliers. Ask for references and look at their real events.
5. Tell guests early and keep it simple
Send save-the-dates as soon as you have a date, ideally many months before. Share clear information on travel, hotels, dress and timing in one place, such as a simple wedding page. The easier you make it, the more guests will come.
6. Leave room for the day itself
Allow time for travel delays and weather. Have a plan B for outdoor events. Leave a little space in the schedule, because some of the best moments are the ones nobody planned.
Rules, costs and venue details change. Please confirm everything with the venue, the local authorities and your planner. Details checked October 2026.
